KASTURBA VS. GANDHI

01 KvG 4x6 Postcard FrontThese are exciting times as we embark on celebrating “WOMEN”!

In keeping with the times, Natya Bharati is proud to bring you our next venture about an empowered woman who was the strength behind the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
She is Kasturba Gandhi.  Kasturba is an epitome of women who were the backbones of leaders that they supported, and without whom, the leaders could probably not have reached the pinnacles of their successes. Some of these women, while strong personalities, remained behind the scenes, and some were even lost in the annals of history.  One such woman was Kasturba, or “Ba” as many fondly called her.

Aside from being known as Mahatma Gandhi’s wife, not much is known about Kasturba.
Who was she? What was her relationship like – with – Her husband?
Her family?

IMG_3056Find out this Fall, when Natya Bharati presents its second 2016 production
KASTURBA VS. GANDHI,
written by our very own local resident Mrs. Nishi Chawla, a well-known playwright and professor of English Literature at the University of Maryland.  And, in a first for Natya Bharati, Directed by a teacher of visual arts, Professor David Rothman.

This play explores Kasturba as the woman – not simply a housewife in the shadows of her husband, but rather her complex personality with multiple layers and shades.  In this play, audiences will see an unseen history unravel, depicting various aspects of Kasturba’s life – from a wife coming to terms with the practices and ideologies of her husband, to the mother struggling to balance the volatile relationship between her husband, her son, and the nation – India.

Come see, the story of a remarkable woman, a silent leader, an empowered individual.  In this important year of the woman, we celebrate and recognize the contributions of Kasturba Gandhi towards India’s independence.  An experience, we hope, will be enlightening and empowering.
